Nigerian mum gives birth to sextuplets in just nine minutes!

Normally you’d have to wait at least five years to have six babies, but for one mum in the U.S. it took just nine minutes.

Thelma Chiaka of Nigerian origin beat odds of 4.7billion to one to give birth to sextuplets on Monday morning. She delivered two sets of twin boys and one set of twin girls between 4.50am and 4.59am at the Women’s Hospital of Texas.

They are all in a stable condition but are in the neonatal intensive care unit after being born weighing between 1lb 2ozs and 2lbs 14ozs.

The boys are yet to be named, but the girls have been called Zina and Zuriel. A picture released from the hospital shows a smiling Thelma with relative Ebere Ofor and members of the neonatal team.

They were delivered by Dr Ziad Haidar and Dr Israel Simchowitz.

A statement from the hospital said:

The Woman’s Hospital of Texas, an HCA Houston Healthcare Affiliate, which delivers more babies than any other Texas hospital, early [Friday] morning welcomed sextuplets, the odds of which are estimated at one in 4.7 billion.
Two sets of twin boys and one set of twin girls were born between 4:50 and 4:59am.
The babies were born at weights ranging from one pound, 12 ounces and two pounds, 14 ounces.
They are in stable condition and will continue to receive care in the hospital’s advanced neonatal intensive care unit.
