12-year-old Turkish Cypriot boy rushed to hospital after drinking a mixture of vodka and fruit juice in school

Father of 12-year-old says he intends to complain to the Education Minister about 'widespread' under-age drinking in and around the school.

Claims of violence and drinking surrounding a Lefkoşa school surfaced after a 12-year-old boy who downed a mixture of vodka and fruit juice “in one go” was treated in hospital after collapsing.

The unnamed boy, who has since recovered, passed out outside the school in Göçmenköy after allegedly knocking back the drink in the grounds last Friday.

Speaking to Kıbrıs, the Turkish-language sister newspaper of Cyprus Today, the boy’s father said he intended to complain to the Education Minister about under-age drinking, which he claimed was “widespread” in and around the school, which was also not publicly identified.

The incident occurred on school premises and drinking alcohol also takes place in classrooms there, he claimed.

My son told me an older pupil from another country brought a mix of fruit juice and vodka and gave it to four of his friends, including my son.
