Armed robber robbed two banks with a ripe avocado

A 47-year-old man has been arrested for aggravated robbery after stealing nearly $12,000 from two banks — using an avocado.

Holy guacamole, this guy’s got stones.

A 47-year-old man in Beersheba, the largest city in Israel’s Negev desert, has been arrested for aggravated robbery after stealing nearly 30,000 Israeli shekels (about $A12,000) from two banks in the region.

His weapon of choice? An avocado.

The Times of Israel reports a man entered a Postal Bank at the Big Beersheba shopping mall last month and gave the teller a scrawled note demanding all the cash at the counter.

Hand over the money in the drawer, read the note, which was written in Hebrew and misspelled “drawer”.

The cashier reportedly hesitated to which the man said, “Put the money in the bag quickly or I’ll throw this grenade.”

The “grenade” he threatened to detonate was, in fact, a whole avocado — painted black. The stunt scored him over NIS 16,000 ($A6424) cash.

Five days later, the man walked into another Postal Bank branch, this time at the Oren Center shopping plaza, also in Beersheba, using the same tactic. This time he pilfered another NIS 12,000.

Security cameras spotted the man wearing hats, sunglasses and even an eye patch in an attempt to disguise himself. Using mobile phone location records, police were able to track the crafty bandit who had already served three years in prison for a previous robbery.

What became of the weaponised avocado, now a hot commodity stateside, is unknown.
