Beach goers in North Cyprus warned as 3 drown in seas in the space of two weeks

The seas of North Cyprus claimed the lives of three people in the last two weeks while six others almost drowned in separate incidents.

Three people drowned in troubled seas last week and six others scrambled or were brought to safety after getting into difficulties – prompting a warning to beach goers to take care and heed danger signals.

Yusuf İzzettin Işık, 64, was the week's first victim, losing his life while swimming in a beach in Çatalköy at about 9pm on Sunday.

The next day, Gazimağusa resident Ali Mücahit Sırmacı, 59, succumbed to high waves off one of the town's beaches, while companion Sadık Akmermer, 55, was rescued by lifeguards and taken to Gazimağusa State Hospital for treatment.
