Warning to beach goers - Do not swim when the wave height exceeds 2 meters”

Beach goers in Cyprus have been advised not to swim when sea wave height exceed two meters.

The warning was made to the public on Wednesday by training and Research Specialist of the Association of Marine Specialist, Türkay Öyken due to the increasing drowning cases in the country.

The country was thrown into mourning last week when four members of a family of five drowned at a beach between Kaplıca and Yedikonuk on Friday last week as a result of heavy sea waves.

Türkay Öyken noted cases of drowning increases in the summer months and want the society to be informed.

He stressed that sea current in recent days are as a result of windy weather which makes the sea more dangerous urging the public to take precautions.

Every year, an average of a thousand people around the world who do not know how to swim, drown in choppy seas or because of dangerous sea currents and these cases are not only limited to the seas but also in the pools.
