Woman arrested in North Cyprus for begging

A woman who came into Cyprus to beg has been arrested and detained by Turkish Cypriot police.

The woman identified only as S.Y was caught red-handed on Friday, October, 18 in front of City Royal Hotel at Gzt. Kemal Asik Street in Lefkosa while begging for money from citizens.

Police said the woman recently entered the country as tourist and started begging the citizens for money. She was arrested on complaint.

The woman was taken to a court in Lefkosa on Saturday. 

She told the court that she had a fight with her husband. 

I had a fight with my husband. Someone who fell in love with me came up to me and asked me to buy soup I was not begging, she said.

The Judge ordered the suspect to be detained in police for 3 days for investigation.
