54-year-old man died after being buried under a pile of earth in Limassol

A 54-year-old man died after being buried under a pile of earth in Limassol on Monday after authorities launched a five-hour rescue operation, police said.

The man was painting a retaining wall to a privately-owned property in Ayios Tychonas. He was working in a residential area on a hill, when the piles of earth trapped him.
Police were notified, and arrived at the scene quickly, they said, where a large-scale rescue operation began.
Firefighters, police, and officials from the labour department all aided in the rescue efforts.
The man’s body was found at approximately 7pm, and he was pronounced dead by state pathologist Nicholas Charalambous, who was at the scene.
An ambulance took the man’s body to Limassol General, and a post-mortem will be conducted on Tuesday to determine the exact cause of death, police said.
