Syrian woman murdered by husband in south Cyprus

Greek Cypriot police on Monday morning found a woman murdered in an apartment in Paphos, south Cyprus and are on the look for her husband.

The woman, a mother of seven — a Syrian national aged 31 was found murdered in her bed bearing multiple knife injuries in many parts of her body. She was found by a social worker.

The crime was committed around 7 am to 8 am on Monday morning. She was rushed in an ambulance to Paphos hospital where she was pronounced dead.

The incident was reported to police by neighbours who had heard shouting coming from the woman’s home and realised that something was wrong.

Greek Cypriot police are investigating the incident have secured an arrest warrant against the husband, a 37-year-old also from Syria, who is the primary suspect in the case.

According to report by Greek Cypriot daily, In-Cyprus, the couple had reportedly been separated and the husband has been reported to the authorities multiple times in the past for incidents of physical abuse in the family, while the husband had been banished from the family residence by court order.

The family has been under the supervision of social services.

Three of the five children living in Cyprus were in the house at the time of the murder. All five children are now at the premises of social services.

Last Monday a complaint had also been filed against the suspect for stealing various objects from the property, while other cases against him for violence in the family are still under investigation.

The victim was a mother to seven children; five children are aged under 12 and lived with her in the Paphos property, and the other two aged 16 and 17 live in Syria.
