Man assault, attacks wife with a knife in Lefkosa for trying to call the police

A man who assaulted his wife and threatened to kill her with a knife after trying to call his brother and the police has been released on bail pending trial.

The man a Turkish Cypriot identified only as M.A.A, committed the crime at about 5:00pm on Tuesday, May, 5 at their residence in Lefkosa. 

He was arrested on Wednesday for beating his wife, a mother of 5 children, on the grounds that she was visiting her cousin's house.

According to report, the victim, was seriously beaten by her husband who threatened to kill her with a knife and also broke her phone for trying to call her brother and the police.

He was charged to a court in Lefkosa on charges of "violence, intentional damage and assault".

Police officer who gave testimony in court said the the accused punched the victim in her head, face and various part of her body in the kitchen of the house following which he took a knife with a wooden handle, pointed it at his wife and told her "I will kill you, who are you, where were you, you were somewhere else." 

When his wife tried to reach the police to seek for help, he took the phone from her and smashed it on the ground.

Police said the accused made a voluntary statement on the incident.

The suspect was released on bail pending trial.
