Man who caused the fire that wrecked havoc in several parts of north Cyprus arrested

A man who is said to be responsible for the fire incident between Tepebaşı and Akdeniz village in North Cyprus on Sunday have been arrested and sent to prison.

The man was arrested on Monday on suspicion of causing the forest fire following a tip off.

The forest fire on Sunday caused a huge damaged to forest resources in the country.

The suspect identified only as Y.S, was found to be trying to burn the forest between Tepebaşı and Akdeniz village for reason not yet identified.

He was taken to a court in Lefkosa on Monday after the arrest.

Police prosecutor told the court that the suspect while driving on the road between Tepebaşı - Akdeniz Village at about 11:00am on Sunday, May, 17, dropped a barbecue burner in his possesion on the forest area which caused the fire. 

The suspect left the scene after causing the fire.

A citizen who was driving behind him saw the fire and tried to extinguish it before it escalated.

The Judge ordered the suspect to remain in detention for 3 days for investigation.
