METU students evacuated from their dorm after huge fire outbreak in north Cyprus

Students of the Middle East Technical University, METU, north Cyprus were evacuated due to huge fires in Tepebaşı and Koruçam Burnu villages on Sunday afternoon. 

The fire that ravaged several parts of northern Cyprus also posed a danger to surrounding villages.

The fire that started at about 11.30am at Tepebaşı on Sunday also reached METU and was stopped at the boundary between METU and an open area nearby. 

The fire fanned by strong wind were gotten under control by airborne helicopters, three from Turkey and two from southern Cyprus.

The incident cased great panic and fear among residents.

Residents of a near by care home were moved to safe areas. No one was injured or hurt in the incident.

A large forest area turned to ash and olive trees in the region, some 600 years old, were also damaged as a result of the fire.

Closed Tepebaşı-Kalkanlı high way will remain closed tonight.
