Strong winds cause fire in four villages in TRNC

Strong winds caused fires in four villages in north Cyprus on Sunday.

The four villages affected are Serdarlı, Yeşilırmak, Yeniceköy and Nergisli

In Serdarlı village, the fire occurred at 2 different places  around 11:00 am. According to police statement, dried grasses burned within 10 acres of land as a result of the fire. The fire was extinguished by police firefighters and residents of the environment.

Strong wind, according to ‘Kibris’, caused electricity cables to tangle and produced sparks which ignited the blazes.

In Yeşilırmak, the fire came very close to the village. It burned 20 acres of shrubbery, several trees and orchard watering pipelines.

Forty acres were burnt on Saturday near the village of Kalecik near Famagusta following a noon fire in an area with olive and carob trees.

Several fires also broke out in other areas, in a short space of time.

In Famagusta, a 40 year old set fire to a barley field he had harvested. The fire spread to a small area beyond the field and he was subsequently arrested.

There was another fire out break in Haspolat too on Saturday, affecting 380 acres of land.

Through out the week series of fire incidents were reported across the island.
