World coronavirus cases have surpassed 5 million

Global coronavirus cases have surpassed 5 million and over 328,000 deaths, with Latin America overtaking the United States and Europe in the past week to report the largest portion of new daily cases globally.

A large number of those came from Brazil, which recently surpassed Germany, France and the United Kingdom as having the world’s third-largest outbreak behind the United States and Russia.

United States: 1,551,853
Russia: 308,705
Brazil: 291,579
UK: 249,619
Spain: 232,555

The first 41 cases of coronavirus were confirmed in Wuhan, China, on Jan. 10 and it took the world until April 1 to reach its first million cases.

Since then, about 1 million new cases are reported every two weeks, according to a Reuters tally.

In the US, all 50 states have at least partially reopened while more than 93,000 people have died in the country. Brazil becomes new hot spot as they recorded nearly 20,000 new infections in a single-day. Only Russia and the US have reported more cases than Brazil.
