Police shoot two Syrian refugees, arrest 30 others for entering the TRNC illegally

Two men were shot and injured by Turkish Cypriot police early Thursday morning whilst trying to escape after a group of 30 Syrians refugees arrived the TRNC illegally by boat.

According to report by Turkish Cypriot media, Yeniduzen, the incident happened at about 6:30am on Thursday when a boat with 30 Syrians including 20 men, three women and seven children – arrived  the coast of the village of Yayla, near Güzelyurt.

Two people who were steering the boat and a man who was on the shore waiting for the boat, were arrested.

Two of the migrants who tried to escape were shot and injured by the police. They were taken to hospital.

Another man, who was also on the shore waiting for the boat fled and is now wanted by authorities.

Police were waiting for the group’s arrival after receiving a notification by the coast guard teams.

30 people, including the children, were taken to Güzelyurt Health Center for PCR testing.

The suspects, who have received a pending order against them, will be brought to court tomorrow morning.
