Manchester United sound out Mauricio Pochettino with Ole Gunnar Solskjaer's troubled reign in jeopardy

Manchester United have sounded out Mauricio Pochettino about him replacing Ole Gunnar Solskjaer as boss.

Senior club figures have made contact with Pochettino's camp - and the Argentine is keen to make United his next job as he looks to get back into management.

Solskjaer appears to be on borrowed time at United following a woeful start to the new season that sank to a new low with Sunday's 6-1 home thrashing by Tottenham.

It is understood United executive vice chairman Ed Woodward is not prepared to sack the Norwegian in the current international break.

But he wants to see a dramatic improvement in performances and results when the Premier League season resumes.

If he doesn't then Woodward could pull the plug on Solskjaer's troubled reign during the next international break in November.

Woodward remains a huge admirer of Pochettino, who has been out of work since Spurs sacked him last November, just five months after he led them to the Champions League final.

Pochettino, 48, has turned down a host of jobs since leaving Spurs, including Barcelona twice, in favour of waiting for a club he believes is the right one for him.

United fit the bill and Pochettino reckons he is up to the challenge of making the fallen giants the most successful club in England once again.

Woodward will be reluctant to axe Solskjaer due to the fact he is part of the club's history and retains a strong relationship with some of his players.

But he fears he might be left with no choice if the team's decline becomes more serious.

United are languishing in 16th place in the table following three points from their three league games - and have lost their first two home games of a league campaign for just the fifth time in the club's history.

Woodward sacked David Moyes after just ten months, while Jose Mourinho was bulleted in December, 2018 after club bosses had failed to back him in the previous transfer window.

With Pochettino available for nothing Woodward could now decide to act and appoint someone who would be hugely popular with increasingly disgruntled fans.
