No hopes for a federal solution in Cyprus - Ersin Tatar

TRNC President, Ersin Tatar has said there are no hopes for a federal solution in the divided island of Cyprus calling for new ideas to be brought to the negotiating table.

Tatar made the remark following his return to the presidential palace on Tuesday night his meeting Greek Cypriot president, Nicos Anastasiades in Nicosia.

Tatar said that he had held a cordial meeting with Anastasiades and added that as the Turkish Cypriot side they are always open for talks to take place.

He added that the issues of the closed city of Maras and the hydrocarbon resources in the Eastern Mediterranean were discussed.

At this stage for the Turkish Cypriot people, an understanding on a federal basis that has been maintained since 1977 does not give much hope, and therefore it is time to sit at the table with new ideas, said Tatar.

Pointing out that as the TRNC, they will not try to avoid talking with the south on improving bilateral relations.

Tatar said he informed Anastasiades that the issue of the closed city of Maraş, the hydrocarbon issue and the embargoes imposed against the Turkish Cypriot people are unacceptable and against human rights.

We laid out our position and left the meeting without offending anyone said Tatar.
For us, it is very important to act in harmony with Turkey on the main issues, he added.
