Federation no longer possible in Cyprus - Turkish Foreign Minister

A federal solution to the Cyprus problem is no longer sustainable, Turkish Foreign Minister Mevlut Cavusoglu said on Wednesday after a meeting in Ankara with UN envoy Jane Holl Lute.

The UN official met with Cavusoglu as part of her task to probe the prospects of an informal meeting between Cyprus’ two community leaders and the three guarantors, Greece, Turkey and the UK.

Cavusoglu said after the meeting that he had told Lute that the “federation project is no longer sustainable”.

In line with realities on island, Turkish side promotes two-state settlement based on equal sovereignty, Cavusoglu said in a Tweet.
Common ground should be reached for new negotiation process, he added, reiterating Turkey’s and Turkish Cypriot leader Ersin Tatar’s position on a two-state solution.

Lute has already met with President Nicos Anastasiades and Tatar, who both said they were ready to participate in a five-party summit, but each expressed opposing views on the form of solution sought.

The Greek Cypriot side reiterates it is ready to resume the talks from where they left off in Crans-Montana in 2017 for a federal solution to the Cyprus problem.
