TRNC government cancels drivers license of student involved in accident

The TRNC Minister of Public Works and Transport, Resmiye Canaltay, has initiated the necessary process to cancel the driving license of a foreign student who was involved in a traffic accident earlier in the week.

The incident happened on Wednesday evening when a 25-year-old foreigner who was high on 410 promil alcohol was involved in an accident close to Alpet petrol station at Dr Fazıl Küçük Boulevard in Lefkosa causing the vehicle to overturned on its roof.

Luckily, there was no loss of life in the accident.

Canaltay, who is also the Registrar of Motor Vehicles, stated on Thursday that, based on the authority given to her by the Motor Vehicles Road and Traffic Amendment Regulation, the student's license will be canceled as she believes that the student's continuing use of motor vehicles creates inconvenience in terms of public safety.

Minister Canaltay said,

Recently, we have observed an increase in the number of people who drink excessive alcohol and get behind the wheel irresponsibly and drive accidents by means of the lives of other people in the traffic. It will be routine practice to cancel the license of such drivers, who do not recognize the rules as if disregarding other people's lives. My request from our people and foreigners in our country is not to get behind the wheel by drinking alcohol, not to speed excessively and to obey traffic rules. This is no joke, it is human life that is at stake.
The tears of those who endanger public safety in traffic will not be looked at and their driving licenses will be canceled, she said.
