Woman's eggs illegally harvested during operation in two hospitals in Lefkosa

A report in local daily, Yeneduzen has claimed that the eggs of a woman, younger than 20, were illegally harvested from her in an operation performed in two private hospitals in Lefkosa in exchange for money.

One of the young women who had sold her eggs for cash issued a complaint seven months ago about the practise

Acting on the claim, the police carried out an operation against the private hospitals in question on July, 15 and arrested two women aged 19.

As part of the investigation, computers, documents and documents in health centers were taken as evidence for examination.

Here is the police statement:

“Within the months of November-December 2020, an investigation was launched by the police upon receiving information that the ovaries of a female person younger than 20 years old were obtained as a result of an operation carried out in two separate private hospitals operating in Lefkosa, in exchange for money.

Within the scope of the investigation carried out, the computers, documents and documents in the mentioned health centers were taken as evidence for examination.

The investigation continues.”

Two women and two medical doctors were arrested for their involvement in illegally harvesting and selling donor eggs, Yeniduzen reported.

Egg donors need to be women aged not less than 20 years and not more than 35 years old. However, harvesting eggs for cash is contrary to the ‘Law and Regulations Regulating the Rules Regarding Human Cell, Tissue and Organ Transplantation’.
