Student sentenced to 11 months in prison for dealing in drugs

A student who was arrested and taken to court on accusation of dealing in drugs has been sentenced to 11 months in prison.

The accused was caught with 25 grams of cannabis-type drugs in his possession at about 11:00am on June, 1, 2021, in Lefkosa.

Police officer who gave testimony in court, said the accused was involved in the crimes of illegal drugs sales and saving.

It was learned that a resident who suspected the accused of dealing in illegal drugs informed the Narcotics and Smuggling Prevention Directorate who carried out an investigation and had the suspect arrested. 

18 grams of drugs was found in 2 homes. Police said they detected some amount of drugs in popeyes pack wrapped in a transparent nylon hidden in an under wear with 2,000TL cash.  

About half a gram, believed to be an Indian Cannabis type drug, wrapped in foil paper was found in the right back pocket of the shorts he was wearing during the control made on the suspect. 

A substance believed to be a cannabis type drug weighing approximately 2 grams was found in the written paper and an indication was taken. 

Delivering his judgement on Thursday last week, the court judge explained that drug use has become widespread in the society, adding that it is considered that a deterrent and exemplary punishment should be given.

The judge underlined the seriousness of the crime for which the accused was convicted and said that the type, amount, and nature of the drug are important factors when sentencing the accused.  

He also pointed out that such crimes are serious and cause uneasiness and anxiety in the society noting that it is important to prevent these crimes and to consider the public interest.
