Police bust and detain 4 foreigners over drugs found in cargo package in north Cyprus

Drugs were found in a package, sent through a shipping company to the TRNC.

A 25-year-old man, a resident of Famagusta who went to collect the package on Wednesday, October, 27, was arrested and detained by the teams of the Narcotics and Smuggling Prevention Directorate.

Police said it seized a large amount of drugs and cash in the dust and smoke operation made in two separate houses related to the incident, and arrested 4 more people.

The cargo package reportedly from south Africa, was sent to a cargo company operating in Lefkosa and suspected to contain drugs.

A 47-yea-old man believed to be related to the issue, was arrested after the control carried out in the cargo package. 

Police said it found a substance believed to be a “methamphetamine” type drug weighing approximately 2 kilograms and 250 grams worth over 2.5 million TL.

Two other residents were also identified and arrested in a search made in two separate residences in Kyrenia. They were determined to be related to the incident.

163,410 TL, 150, Nigerian Naira, 345 Euros, 750 pounds and $163 cash was found and taken as evidence.  

They were taken to court on charges of 'Importing, Delivering, Receiving and Saving illegal drugs'. 

Police said they carried out a related operation in South Africa and all of Cyprus as they have been following the suspects for a long time. 

A Turkish Cypriot taxi driver who was among the suspects arrested told the court that he was not related to the incident.
