Student deliberately set apartment on fire due to misunderstanding with landlord

Two of three suspects arrested in connection with an arson that happened in Gonyeli on Sunday has been released and the third to face trial.

The fire incident happened on Sunday morning in Gonyeli.

Two of the suspects were found not to be related to crime and were released while the third suspect, a Moroccan, was brought back to court on Tuesday on charges of setting a fire to a building and intentional damage.

Police in its testimony in court, said the third suspect, a 24-year-old student, "deliberately and unlawfully" threw an lit cigarette butt on his bed in the bedroom of his apartment, where he was a tenant, due to the issue between himself and the landlord, causing a fire.

The other two suspects were in the house at the time of the fire but were later found not guilty.

Reviewed camera images of the incident showed that the suspect had earlier left the apartment with a suitcase before the fire.

Police said, the suspect gave a voluntary statement and confessed to his crimes adding that he will tell everything.

He was released on bail and banned from travelling abroad. He must report to the police station at least once a week, deposit 15 thousand TL in cash and 1 guarantor to sign a bail bond of 50 thousand TL.
