Three foreigners involved in accident assaults police officer

Three Palestinian nationals who were involved in an accident in the early hours of Thursday morning in Gonyeli attacked a police officer who came to the scene of the accident.

The three men between the age of 20 and 22, were involved in an accident at around 12:30am on Thursday in Gonyeli. No one was injured in the accident.

The driver of the car had carelessly entered a street and lost control of the vehicle and in the process veered off the road which caused the vehicle to hit a wooden pole.

A police officer who came to accident scene for investigation was reportedly assaulted by the men. The police officer was left with a broken nose.

They were arrested and taken to court on charges of causing "grave damage and for assaulting a police officer".

Police said, after the suspects were arrested, they were checked for alcohol because their behavior was not normal, and considering the fact that they might have used drugs after alcohol was not found in their system, they were taken to the Lefkosa State Hospital and their blood was taken for examination.

They were detained for a period of one day for investigation to be carried out.
