Turkish Cypriot man who set fire on fleet of cars in 2016 arrested on his return to the TRNC

A Turkish Cypriot man who set fire on cars parked in a garage in 2016 and fled the country afterwards was arrested on his return to the country on Monday.

The man identified as Evren Baysal at 12:35am on February, 19, 2016 went to a car warehouse belonging to Mahmut Selkar and Mustafa Kaya sited across the Dr.  Fazıl Küçük Boulevard Religious Site in Lefkosa and set fire on 9 high-value vehicles with a total value of 507,000 stg at the time.

He fled the country following the incident.

He was fingered as being responsible for a series of arson events in Lefkosa in 2016.

He returned to the country on Monday and surrendered to the police. He was arrested at Ercan airport and taken to court. 

He explained that they had deliberately and unlawfully damaged it by pouring flammable material on it and setting it on fire.

He stated that they deliberately and unlawfully hit and broke the main entrance door of the workplace, which is made of east-facing glass, with a hard object and deliberately started a fire by pouring flammable material into the building and setting it on fire, causing material damage of 10 thousand TL.

The police stated that the suspect left the country from Ercan Airport on February 16, 2016, before the date of the incident, and came from Ercan Airport on December 13, 2021 and surrendered to the police.

The police explained that the suspect entered the TRNC with a PCR test, since he did not have a Covid-19 vaccine, and was placed in Alayköy Police Station cells as per the pending order against him, since he had to be legally under quarantine for 5 days. The police demanded that the suspect be detained for 3 days, as the suspect had just arrived in the TRNC and this quarantine process could be completed.
