Turkish Cypriot workers tried to dump refuse in front of municipality for non payment of salary

There were tense moments in Famagusta Municipality on Friday morning when a group of municipal workers who have not been paid their salary attempted to dump garbage in front of the municipality building.

The attempt was however blocked by the municipality.

City Council Member Erhun Şahali, who spoke to Yenuduzen on the matter said that most of the workers did not receive a salary before the New Year and this was an "outburst of anger".

Şahali said: “Today's action was not carried out by the union. Before the New Year, around 80-90 percent of the workers could not receive their salary. Few workers were paid, with few funds transferred to some banks. Therefore, some of our workers, who could not receive a salary today, had a burst of anger and wanted to take action by throwing garbage in front of the municipality. The action is blocked. At the same time, the Mayor was having a New Year's breakfast with some candidates at the municipality facilities on Sakarya Street.”
