Most of the cases announced as positive were false - Near East University

The Near East University has claimed that “in their analysis, they were able to determine that people infected with viruses such as Rhinovirus, Enterovirus and Influenza were also diagnosed as COVID-19 positive in tests performed with other PCR kits in different laboratories.

Lefkoşa State Hospital DNA Laboratory Manager, Molecular Biology Specialist Eldem Albayrak stated that the PCR kits they are working with are specific to the COVID virus type.

Speaking to YENİDÜZEN, Albayrak claimed that "this type of explanation has no scientific basis and there is no truth to it".

In their analysis, the Near East University claimed that people infected with viruses such as Rhinovirus, Enterovirus and Influenza in tests performed with other PCR kits in different laboratories were diagnosed with a false positive diagnosis of COVID-19.

Near East University, which has the only laboratory accredited by the Quality Control Program in Molecular Diagnosis-MOTAKK and has a PCR Diagnostic Kit, made important statements about the course of the Omicron variant, which has become the dominant variant by spreading rapidly in the country.

Explaining that the antigen kits used missed 40 percent of Omicron cases, Near East University announced that they determined that people infected with viruses such as Rhinovirus, Enterovirus and Influenza were diagnosed as COVID-19 positive.

Continuing its studies on COVID-19 with a strong team of 32 experts, including virologists, medical geneticists, microbiologists, molecular medicine and molecular biologists, Near East University has developed a research within the university in order to follow the spread of the Omicron variant and carry out the process in a healthier way. He emphasized that Turkey's native PCR Diagnosis and Variant Detection kit is the most reliable follow-up method in the country.

Saying that they are following the Omicron variant, which is spreading rapidly in the country, with a team of experts in their fields, Near East University Deputy Rector Prof. Dr. Tamer Şanlıdağ said that they reached striking results regarding the Omicron variant in the analyzes they performed in their laboratory, which was developed by the Near East University and accredited by the Molecular Diagnosis Quality Control Program-MOTAKK in the country.

Prof. Dr. Şanlıdağ stated that they detected errors in the diagnosis of COVID-19 made with imported PCR kits in different laboratories, and said, "We determined that people infected with different viruses such as Rhinovirus, Enterovirus and Influenza were diagnosed with a false positive diagnosis of COVID-19." Stating that he missed 40 percent of Omicron cases, Prof. Dr. Tamer Şanlıdağ emphasized that not only antigen tests, but also the TRNC's native PCR Diagnosis and Variant Detection kit, which is accredited by MOTAKK, is the most reliable option for a healthy follow-up of the Omicron variant.

Lefkoşa State Hospital DNA Laboratory Manager, Molecular Biology Specialist Eldem Albayrak explained that the PCR kits they were working with were specific to the SARS (COVID) virus type.

Speaking to YENİDÜZEN, Albayrak reiterated that the test kits are approved kits that are also used by the Ministry of Health in Turkey.

Saying that “PCR kits are specific to the virus we are working with,” Albayrak stated that such statements have no scientific basis and there is no truth to them.
