Student to be tried in court for encouraging prostitution, force detention and robbery

A woman will be tried in court after she was arrested for encouraging prostitution and robbery in Lefkosa.

The suspect, a Nigerian was arrested during the week and taken to a court in Lefkosa on charges of “Encouraging Prostitution, detaining someone with Intent to Engage in Sexual Relationships, Robbery, Threat of Violence and battering.

Police officer who testified in court, said that the suspect's roommate, a 21-year-old Nigerian student was detained by the suspect with the intention of having sex with men she did not know, and that she threatened to kill her and her family if she refused to accept it.

It is alleged that the suspect committed the crime of robbery by forcibly taking the victims Nigerian passport, vaccination card and her documents by encouraging her, whom she introduced via a social media application, to prostitution with a male person at an address in Lefkosa for 84,000 Naira (Nigerian Currency). He informed the court that an investigation had been initiated.

The police demanded that the suspect be detained for 3 days for investigation purposes, stating that there were camera footage that needed to be taken regarding the issue, and that the statements made by the suspect would be confirmed.

Evaluating the testimony the judge ordered the suspect to be kept in police custody for 3 days at the first stage for investigation purposes.
