Woman arrested for encouraging prostitution released on bail, a second person to be tried

A Nigerian woman who was arrested for encouraging prostitution and theft has been released on bail and will face trial in the future while a second suspect will also be tried.

The incident took place in Kucuk Kaymaklı, Lefkosa in October 2021 but information about the incident reached the police on January, 6 and the suspect was arrested on January, 7 and then taken to a court in Lefkosa on charges of “Encouraging Prostitution, detaining someone with Intent to Engage in Sexual Relationships, Robbery, Threat of Violence and battering.

On Tuesday last week, she was taken to court for the second time and her detention period extended to 6 days for more investigation to be carried out on the matter.

Police officer who testified in court, said that the suspect's roommate, a 21-year-old Nigerian student was detained and beaten by the suspect with the intention of having sex with men she did not know via Snapchat, and that she threatened to kill her and her family if she refused to accept it.

It is alleged that the suspect committed the crime of robbery by forcibly taking the victims Nigerian passport, vaccination card and her documents.

Subsequently, the police said a male person whom the suspect introduced through the application in question, to have sex with the woman at an address in Lefkosa for 84,000 Naira (Nigerian Currency) was also found as a suspect.

A second suspect, a female was arrested on January, 13.

They were taken back to court for the third time on Monday, January, 17. 

Stating that the investigation initiated against the suspects with student status in the country has been completed, the police demanded that the suspects be given a suitable guarantee.

Evaluating the testimony given in court, the judge said that the suspects will be released on bail on the condition that they are prohibited from going abroad, report to the police station once a week, deposit 15,000 TL in cash as collateral, bring 2 credible TRNC citizen as guarantors to sign a personal bail bond of 200,000TL each.

***I doubt if she can perfect this bail condition.
