Clashes break out among asylum seekers in south Cyprus

Clashes broke out among African migrants early on Wednesday at Pournara reception centre in South Cyprus where hundreds of international asylum seekers live.

Dozens of people were injured in the attack in which a large rock was thrown.

The fight broke out around 8.20am. Officers dressed in riot gear arrived at the centre and intervened.

A total of 48 migrants who were injured were transferred to the Nicosia general hospital for treatment.

Police said there were no serious injuries.

The fight appears to have started late on Tuesday night among people of African descent.

Investigations continue to determine the causes.

Media reported the brawl was caused after disagreements over a basketball game they were playing while others said it was allegedly theft.

The overcrowded Pournara facility currently hosts over 2,000 people, according to official data.

Some 4,000 to 5,000 asylum seekers manage to stay in Cyprus through fake marriages and pretend college students.
