Student released from detention 7 months later after complaint dropped case against her

A female student who has been in police custody for 7 months and awaiting trial for alleged robbery and assault in Lefkosa has been released without charges.

The young woman, an African student in North Cyprus was arrested in Lefkosa in July, 2021 after another student complained to the police about her.

She was subsequently detained by the police and taken to court.

She was released on Friday, February, 11, 2022 after the person who reported her to the police told a court in Lefkosa that he was dropping the case against her claiming that there was a misunderstanding.

Upon the statement, the Prosecutor's Office re-evaluated the file, deciding not to take the case forward and filed a non-prosecution.
