Drug found in the blood of accident victim

The driver of the vehicle which was involved in an accident on Saturday, February, 19 in Lefkosa had drugs in his system at the time of the incident. 

The accident occurred at about 1:30pm on Saturday, February, 19 at the the roundabout at the new by-pass connecting Girne and Lefkosa.

According to police statement, the driver of the car, a 23-year-old male was driving fast and carelessly while approaching the sloppy roundabout. He lost control of the vehicle which caused the vehicle to hit a road side barrier and then somersaulted off the road into an open field. The vehicle caught fire after this.

The fire was extinguished by fire fighters and a male passenger who was injured in the accident was was rushed to the hospital for treatment.

The driver, a student in the island was arrested following the accident and a test carried out on him revealed the presence of drug (cannabis type narcotic substance) in his blood.

He was released on bail pending trial and banned from leaving the TRNC. He will report to the nearest police station once a week, sign a personal bail bond worth 50,000TL and deposits 5,000 TL in cash.
