Student sentenced to 18 months in prison for dealing in drugs
A female student who was arrested and tried foe drugs crimes has been sentenced to 18 months in prison by a Lefkosa court.
The defendant, a Nigerian was given the prison sentence on Monday.
She was arrested on March, 21, 2021 on Atatürk Caddesi in Lefkosa along with two other people after drugs were found in their possession. Police caught them due to their suspicious behavior.
4,500 dollars believed to have been obtained from the sale of drugs and 4,330TL were seized from them following a search in their apartments in which more drugs were discovered.
Delivering judgement, court judge, Murat Soytaç stated that they evaluated the case against the defendant who was accused of possessing 54 grams of cannabis and cocaine and giving same to third parties.
Soytaç underlined that the crimes committed by the accused are very serious crimes that require long-term imprisonment.
Noting that a deterrent penalty should be applied while convicting such crimes for the sake of public interest, Soytaç announced that for this reason, they unanimously sentenced the accused to 18 months in prison for the crimes she was convicted of.
