Student sentenced to 18 months in prison by a court in Lefkosa

A student who was caught with drug has been sentenced to 18 months in prison by a court in Lefkosa.

The decision was announced on Friday.

The accused, was caught with 150 pills containing MDMA type drugs in an operation organized by the narcotics teams in Famagusta on October, 2, 2021. He was taken to court on charges of "Illegal drug importation and disposition.

It was learned that he had imported the pills, while he was entering the TRNC from Ercan Airport on September 27, 2021.

At the decision hearing, one of the judge handling the hearing said the crimes committed by the accused are very serious crimes that require long-term imprisonment.

The judge stated that they evaluated against the fact that the drug in possession of the defendant was a type of MDMA, one of the types that threaten human health, and that the amount of the drug was overwhelming.  

He mentioned that drug dealers sell drugs with lies such as "drugs are not addictive, they are good for your health, you can quit whenever you want".  

He stated that while convicting such crimes for the sake of public interest, a deterrent penalty should be applied and therefore they sentenced the accused to 18 months in prison for the crimes he was convicted of.
