Suspects arrested for drug found at Ercan Airport fall sick in court

One of four suspects arrested in connection with drugs found at the Ercan airport and currently facing trial reportedly fell ill while in court on Sunday.

On Thursday last week, the Turkish Cypriot police and the Narcotics and Smuggling Prevention Directorate carried out a targeted search on courier packages at Ercan Airport and found 5 kilos and 200 grams of cannabis type narcotic hidden among chili peppers in a suitcase.

The package was brought into the country by a student from Africa.

Three other people, also African students, were arrested in connection with the incident.

They were taken to a court in Lefkosa on Friday on charges of Illegal Drugs (Cannabis) Purchase, Import and Saving and given a 3-day prison order for more investigation to be carried out.

Police said it was determined that the first suspect was to deliver the said package in exchange for $500.

They were paraded in court again on Sunday and while the court section was ongoing, one of the suspects suddenly fell ill and was rushed to the hospital in an ambulance.

They were ordered to remain in detention for another 8 days for more investigations to be carried out on the matter.
