TRNC has reached goal of vaccinating 80 per cent of its population

The TRNC had achieved its goal of vaccinating more than 80 per cent of its population against Covid-19.

This was made known by the Minister of Health, Ali Pilli on Wednesday. The Minister said the number of daily cases will steadily fall by April but warned that the elderly and persons with chronic illnesses should continue to be protected.

Evaluating the country’s health sector, Pilli said that the biggest problem experienced in the health sector was system related.

He said that so far a total of 906,108 Covid-19 vaccines have been administered, placing the TRNC above most countries.

The health minister said that the majority of cases detected were of the Omicron variant which was much more transmissible than previous variants.

“That is why we need to continue to protect our elderly and vulnerable groups,” Pilli warned.

He said that a number of steps were also being taken to address problems and shortages experienced in the public health sector.

Pilli announced that a new 10-bed ICU would become operational at the Gazimağusa State Hospital as of next week and that completing the construction of the Güzelyurt State Hospital was among the government’s top priorities.

He added that a tender had been launched in Turkiye for the construction of a new 500-bed public hospital in Lefkoşa.
