Six students sentenced to between 18 and 30 months in prison for drugs
Six international students, has been sentenced to between 18 and 30 months in prison for dealing in drugs.
The 6 defendants who are all Nigerians were handed the sentence by a court in Lefkosa on Wednesday.
They were arrested during a raid carried out by the General Directorate of Police, Directorate of Narcotics and Smuggling on September, 13, 2021, after getting tip off about a house where drugs was being sold Lefkosa.
Police said that during the search of their apartment, a substance believed to be a synthetic Cannabinoid type drug weighing approximately 3 grams was found, wrapped in 6 foil papers, ready for sale, and in green socks hidden in shoes and wardrobe belonging to one of the suspect.
Delivering judgement on the matter, the court judge underlined that the crimes committed by the defendants are very serious and grave crimes. He said the crimes were evaluated against the fact that the amount of drugs one of the defendants was carrying was overwhelming. He underlined that deterrent punishment should be applied when convicting such crimes for the sake of public interest.
The judge said one of the defendants, who had saved different amounts of drugs, was sentenced to 30 months in prison, the second received 20 months, the third, fourth and fifth defendants got 18 months while the sixth got 10 months jail term.
