Third person arrested in connection with weed found at Ercan airport, suspects planned to bypass airport security without getting caught

A third person has been arrested in connection with package fund with cannabis at the Ercan Airport on Wednesday.

Police said the suspects were found with a substance believed to be a cannabis type drug, weighing approximately 2 kilograms, hidden in 16 corn flakes packages in a colored handbag.

At about 2:40am on Wednesday, April, 6, two foreigners arriving the TRNC were found with 2 kilos of cannabis type drugs hidden inside some pack of cornflakes inside their suitcases at Ercan Airport. The two suspects, aged, 28 and 31, both female from Zimbabwe were arrested following the discovery. 

One of the suspects voluntarily gave a statement saying that she brought the drugs to the island in exchange for 5,000 USD.

In further investigation carried out within the scope of the "Operation Staples" by the teams of the Narcotics and Smuggling Prevention Directorate, another person who was found to be related to the issue was arrested.

The third suspect, a 36-year-old male was arrested after being found to be related to the issue. During a search at his residence, a nylon press machine believed to contain drug residues was found and taken as evidence.

The other two suspects were taken to court again on Friday. Police told the court that before entering the country, the suspects had communicated by phone messages about how to pass the drugs from the airport without being caught why passing the X-Ray device

They were sent to prison for a period of 3 days for more investigation.
