Thursday is public holiday to mark Turkey's 103 anniversary

Thursday, May, 19 is public holiday in Turkey and Northern Cyprus to celebrate and Commemorate the Atatürk Youth and Sports Day.

The day commemorates Mustafa Kemal Atatürk’s landing in Samsun on May 19, 1919, which is regarded as the beginning of the Turkish War of Independence.

Week-long events to celebrate and Commemorate the Atatürk Youth and Sports Day started with a ceremony on Monday.  

The celebration is the 103rd anniversary of the fire of liberation of modern day Turkey.

On May 19, 1919, Mustafa Kemal Atatürk, the founder of modern day Turkiye, went to Samsun and that was the day the flow of history was shaped and the day the Turkish people obtained their republic.

Atatürk then dedicated the day to the country’s youth to whom he entrusted the future of the Turkish nation.

Wreaths will be laid at all Ataturk Monuments throughout the TRNC
