Woman caught with 11kg of weeds worth 6 million TL at Ercan Airport

A woman who was trying to smuggle weed into the TRNC via the Ercan Airport was nabbed by the Narcotics and Smuggling Prevention Teams, Customs Department at the point of entry

The suspect, a Greek woman identified with the initial, A.K was identified and arrested by a joint team of Narcotics and Smuggling Prevention Teams and airport customs in a 'Last Journey Operation' at the airport on Thursday, May, 5.

11kg of cannabis type drugs with a market value of 6 million TL was found hidden in the suspect's suitcase. The drugs were seized as evidence.

Police said the suspect voluntarily confessed to her crimes through an interpreter.

Following an investigation, it was discovered that the suspect had come into contact in with a person in Greece who was known to be involved in drug trafficking under the name of ‘Makis’, who would provide her with the ticket, the entrance papers to the north and hotel accommodation, and an additional €450 for travel expenses, the court heard.

It was revealed that on the instructions of ‘Makis’, the woman met with a courier on May 5 at the airport in Greece, who passed on the airline ticket and entry documents to the north and the hotel. The drugs would be delivered by another unknown individual to the hotel in the north, where the female suspect was staying, for which she would receive €1,000.

Police said the drug had a connection with Greece and the north of Cyprus.

Police said it will carry out an investigation to determine if the incident is also related to the south of Cyprus.

The suspect was brought to court and given a 3-day detention period for investigation purpose.
