Magnitude 4.9 earthquake rocks Cyprus, felt in Turkey, Syria, Lebanon and Israel

The island of Cyprus was rocked by a magnitude of 4.9 earthquake that happened off the south west coast in the early hours of Friday morning which was felt throughout the island, especially in Larnaca, south Cyprus and Famagusta.

There were no immediate reports of injuries or damage, in the earthquake that happened at 4:40am on Friday, June, 10, 2022 and felt 22 km southeast of coastal Larnaca.

The Cyprus seismological centre said the earthquake had a depth of 45km, when it struck just off the Xylofagou coast in the south of the country. 

The US Geological Research Center and the Euro-Mediterranean Seismological Center said the earthquake has a magnitude of 5.0 while the Kandilli Observatory center put it at 4.7.  

The Turkish Disaster and Emergency Management Presidency Earthquake Department (AFAD) out the number at magnitude of 4.6. and recorded an epicenter of the earthquake was 13 km off the land and at a depth of about 42 km.

The earthquake was felt all over the island, especially in Larnaca and Famagusta. 

An official at the Turkish geological survey department said the earthquake was also felt in neighbouring Syria, Lebanon, Israel and Turkey.
