Greek Cypriot man who physical assaulted a Congolese woman released on bail, to be tried on 10 charges

The 43-year-old Greek Cypriot man caught on video assaulting a Congolese woman with a baby in her arms will face as many as ten charges.

The charges which were filed against him by Larnaca district court on Tuesday relate to the offense of racism, public indignity and assault.

The accused on July 13 in the port of Larnaca, was caught on video beating a 29-year-old Congolese woman while she was holding her 11-month-old baby in her arms. The verbally and physically abusive incident was videotaped by a bystander.

He has been released on restrictive conditions, including the signing of a bond of €20,000 and travel restrictions outside of Cyprus.

The accused sold an evidently mechanically faulty car to the woman for €900,

The woman had asked for her money back- something that caused tension leading to him assaulting the woman physically. The baby was not hurt.

The accused claims he had the intention of returning the money once the woman returned the car.
