Greek Cypriot man who physically assaulted a Congolese woman threatened to kill her and her child

A 43-year-old Greek Cypriot man who was caught on a viral video kicking and assaulting a Congolese woman holding her 11-month-old baby has been remanded in police custody for four days.

The incident happened near Larnaca port on Wednesday, July, 13. The video went viral on Thursday and was universally condemned.

He appeared before a Larnaca district court on Friday where he faced criminal charges.

The 29-year-old woman who is an asylum seeker from Congo, visited the hospital for examinations where doctors found that she had bruises and scratches on various parts of her body but her baby suffered no injuries.

Among others, the 43-year-old, is facing charges about violation of the law on racism, assault, violence against a woman, and threats.

Report say he threatened to kill both the woman and her child.

The woman brought a car from the man last week for €920 but discovered that it had mechanical problems. She was assaulted by the man when she asked for a refund.

The man is said to have used racist language saying “this is my country and I will do what I want” before he started hitting and kicking the woman, who was on the ground holding her 11-month-old son in her arms. The suspect also attacked her brother who was at the scene.

The eyewitness said they heard the perpetrator speaking in English threatening to kill the woman and her infant if she did not leave the area. Once the 43-year-old realised the eyewitness was recording the assault, he grabbed an iron crowbar and threatened to kill her too, the witness told the court.
