Turkish Cypriot man who caught an endangered shark in north Cyprus shared photo of himself posing with the fish on social media

Turkish Cypriot man who caught an endangered shark in Yedidalga, shared a photo of himself posing with the fish on social media.

Mustafa Oymacı's post on social media posing with the fish drew attention fro Environmental activist Hasan Sarpten who reacted to the incident, which many internet blogs featured as a 'heroic narrative'.

Sarpten explained that the captured Isurus oxyrinchus "short-finned mako shark" is among the species classified as "Endangered" by IUCN (World Union for Conservation of Nature and Natural Resources), emphasizing that the incident is a crime in the international sense.

Sarpten's post:

CREATE A HERO FROM THE FISHERMAN WHO KILLED THE SHARK ‼

Our amateur fisherman, Mustafa Bey, announced that he has caught the "short-finned mako shark", scientific name Isurus oxyrinchus, which is classified as "Endangered" by the IUCN (World Union for Conservation of Nature and Natural Resources).

On top of that, many newspapers gave place to this news in the manner of "heroism". From here, we understand once again that we have not yet brought the slightest awareness to our fisherman friends or our press.

Aside from the crimes we have committed in the international sense, we feel sorry for these creatures who were brutally killed with the bad image created by the movie "jaws" years ago. However, these endangered sharks are the greatest friend of the marine ecosystem and the worst enemy of invasive species, especially pufferfish.

With all due respect, there is no real fishing or journalism without even this simple knowledge...
