Cypriot women leave parental home earlier than men

Cypriot women are leaving the parental household about one and a half years earlier than men – at an average of 26.5 and 28 respectively – while Cyprus overall is slightly above the EU average.

The latest data compiled by Eurostat, for the year 2021, found that men are lagging behind women in leaving the family home in every single EU country. The disparity, however, was much more pronounced in some countries.

The EU average is 27.4 years for men and 25.5 for women, meaning that the one-and-a-half-year disparity amongst the genders in Cyprus is slightly below that across the bloc. The average for both genders is 26.5.

The average age in which men leave the parental household is above 30 in 11 countries while that is the case for women in only two – Portugal and Croatia.

The greatest disparity is in Romania where the average for men is 30.3 but only 25.6 for women. Sweden, Denmark and Iceland were closest to equality with an age disparity of 0.4, 0.5, and 0.9 years respectively.
