Drunk driver hit taxi driver in Gonyeli, driver in intensive care

A taxi driver is currently in intensive care unit at the Lefkosa State Hospital after he was hit by a drunk driver in the early hours of Thursday morning.

The incident occurred on Atatürk Caddesi in Gönyeli, at around 3:30am on Thursday.

According to police statement, a taxi driver identified as Ozan Polat, 19, was standing outside his vehicle, arguing with his passengers, when he was knocked down by a rented car driven by a 24-year-old drunk man, only identified as AJO. Polat was thrown 40 meters by the car and fell into the road.

He fled the scene of the accident with the vehicle but was later found and arrested on Fuat Mustafa Street at 4.50am.

Police said he had 93 milligrams of alcohol in his system.

Ozan Polat, who was seriously injured as a result of the accident, was taken to the Lefkosia State Hospital, where he remains in intensive care following surgery.

Polat diagnosed with skull fracture and cerebral hemorrhage. Police said his life was in danger.

Police said they will investigate whether the driver himself drove the vehicle at the time of the accident, and that the suspect did not make any voluntary statements on this matter, but only made a statement that he had driven the vehicle himself.

Also, an investigation will be carried out regarding the identities of the 3 unknown persons who were arguing with Ozan Polat on the road at the time of the accident, and that there are suspicions that this incident may have occurred by pushing Ozan Polat in front of the suspect's vehicle, knowingly or unknowingly, during the discussion.

The police also stated that the suspect came to the TRNC to register as a student on March 09, 2021, but has been in the TRNC for 488 days without a residence permit.

He will be detained in the police for 1 day for more investigations to be carried out on the matter.
