More people arrested for assaulting Liberian student, suspects released on bail and to face trial in the future

The number of people who were arrested for attacking and brutally assaulting a Liberian student in Lefkosa this week has increased to 9.

The suspects were once again brought to court within the scope of the investigation launched in relation to the incident on Thursday. They were charged with “Unlawful gathering, Serious Battering, Violent Equipment Carrying.”

The incident happened on Sunday evening in Kyrenia street in Lefkosa when a group of Turkish Cypriot teenagers attacked and battered a Liberian student. The incident which was caught on camera was widely criticized on social media.

The suspects seriously battered Willian Antony Peters with a baseball bat and wooden stick on the grounds that he had beaten their friend.

The suspects, AS, 15, Ö. S, 17, HB, 19, AS, 18, EFY, 19, SA, 16, FCG, 18, Bilal Şahan, 31 and Mustafa Alici, 38 appeared before the court on Thursday. The hearing was closed because of one of the suspect who is 15 years old.

The police stated that the investigation regarding the matter was completed and demanded that the suspects be given a suitable guarantee in order to ensure their presence in their cases in the future.

Evaluating the testimony given in court, the judge released the suspects on bail, and to face trial in the future.

They are banned from going abroad for the purpose of being present at the trial, report to the nearest police station one day a week, a cash collateral of 5,000TL and one guarantor each which must be a TRNC citizen with 150,000 TL.
