Taxi driver who lost money in gambling lied that he was robbed by an African he gave a lift to
It has been discovered that a taxi driver, who claimed that he had a knife to his throat and was robbed by African students, lied, as the taxi driver gambled with the money and claimed it was stolen.
Turkish Cypriot taxi driver, Eray Şanverdi, who went to the police in Girne at around 4:15am on Wednesday, September, 21, told the police that an African customer had a knife to his throat, and that 11,500 liras had been stolen from him.
In his statement, he said the suspect, who he claimed that he took as customers to Çatalköy at night, and was sitting in the back seat in a secluded and dark area, suddenly held a knife to his throat, and stole 11,500 liras, which was the proceeds of the taxi.
Examining the addresses mentioned in the statement, the police determined that the suspect did not receive black customers and was not in Çatalköy at the time of the incident. The suspect, who was arrested on charges of making false statements to the police and stealing, was brought to court and a warrant was issued for his detention for one day.
Police in a statement said that in the further investigation carried out after the incident came to the knowledge of the police, it was determined that although the suspect had not committed such a crime, the driver committed public mischief by making false statements to the police and that he spent the money belonging to his employer by gambling in a casino claiming it was stolen by him.
