Man arrested for human trafficking

Turkish Cypriot police last week arrested a man on charges of human trafficking.

The suspect identified only as S.Ç arrested on Thursday, October, 20 and taken to court on Friday, October, 21.

Police officer who testified in court said 3 refugees of Syrian nationality were identified during the search of a truck used by the suspect, which entered the country from the Kyrenia Port at around 9:00am on Tuesday, October 18, 2022.

The suspect was arrested for the crime of human smuggling.

Police said the suspect said he did not know how the refugees got into the truck.

Police said the investigation is continuing. The cell phone of the suspect will be examined and there may be other persons connected with the crime.

The police officer demanded that the suspect be detained for 5 days, stating that there are statements to be taken and persons to be investigated.

While the suspect's lawyer, Mustafa Atakara, did not object to the deadline, he asked whether an introduction ceremony was held for the refugees and how much money the suspect had received. The police stated that the introductory ceremony has not been held yet, and that the amount of money that came out of the suspect was 60 liras.

Evaluating the facts, the court ordered the suspect to be detained for 5 days.
