Student arrested for staying illegally in the TRNC for 507 days

A student who stayed illegally in the TRNC for 507 days will face trial after he was arrested.

The suspect identified only as AKK, 23, who police said has been on the run for 507 days in the north of Cyprus was identified and arrested on Wednesday, October, 19 and taken to court on the same day on charges of "being found without a residence permit" in the country.

Police said that the suspect, who was identified in Ortaköy, in Lefkosa, at around 4:00am on October 19, during the immigration control was found to have been in the country without a residence permit for 507 days.

The police said that the suspect entered the country on March 31, 2021 with a 60-day student visa, and stated that an investigation should be made for what purposes and where he was on the island during his stay in the north of Cyprus.

The police demanded that the suspect be kept in police custody for 2 days so that the investigation could be conducted safely.
