The perception of corruption in the TRNC is alarming new report claims

The results of the “North Cyprus Corruption Perceptions Report” prepared according to Transparency International criteria, once again revealed the corruption in the country.

76 percent of the business people surveyed think that bribery and corruption are common in northern Cyprus. A majority of 70 percent stated that the government is run by major interest groups.

In the executive summary of the report, “96% of the business people surveyed think that there is bribery and corruption in the Turkish Republic of Northern Cyprus (TRNC). Moreover, 76% of them think that corruption is a 'very serious problem'” .

It was stated that corruption occurred mostly in the allocation and lease of public land and buildings. Public tenders and permits followed, as well as incentives.

Corruption score decreased from 36 to 28 in the north of Cyprus. The European Union average was announced as 64. Northern Cyprus ranked 140th out of 181 countries.

According to the report, 4 out of 10 business people declared that they actually paid bribes to get services from the "state", while it was stated that public resources were abused by "politicians and senior civil servants".

54 percent of business people also stated that corruption has increased compared to last year.

To the question “How Successful is the Government in Fighting Corruption”, 87% of business people stated that they were very unsuccessful.

77% think that those who are involved in corruption are not punished and that "they stay with the perpetrator".

The Friedrich-Ebert-Stiftung (FES) Cyprus 2021 report, prepared by two academics Ömer Gökçekuş and Sertaç Sonan, which deals with the perception of corruption in the north of Cyprus, has been announced.

While Sertaç Sonan presented the report, FES Cyprus Director Hubert Faustmann stated that the report, which was prepared in 180 countries, was also prepared by the Friedrich-Ebert-Stiftung for the unrecognized 'TRNC'. Faustmann stated that they have done this work to promote the “fight against corruption” and said, “Corruption and the weakness of good governance create serious problems in northern Cyprus”.
